The hinge tip or the inclination of the door rotation axis versus gravity is an important aspect of the door operation. The consequences of this angle will directly influence the energy that the user will have to provide to close the door. The hinge tip lowers or raises the center of gravity of the door while opening. This potential energy will now be used to close the door. The absence of this will be felt immediately. It is sufficient to park a car on an inclination to see the effects on closing efforts.
How to Measure?
SpeedPod or EnergyPod are installed on the door. Following a full swing of the door, fully opened to fully closed, will provide the system with sufficient information to calculate this inclined plane. Understand that the reference for this measurement is gravity. The device will report the two angles in X and Y versus gravity vector.
Application
As with many measurements, a value in specification confirms to a certain extent the validity of this part of the door system. An unexpected inclination can point to different causes. One could be that the vehicle with the observed characteristics was not sitting on a level ground. Maybe, in case of active suspension or load case, the vehicle was tilted. When the test is expanded to left and right, we could look for symmetry or asymmetry. Asymmetry could point in the direction of a squareness issue. Unrelated numbers could simply point to an issue on the hinge installation on one side. All assist in troubleshooting and identifying the right cause.
