Quality Control

In the competitive landscape of automotive, quality remains a top priority for all manufacturers. As always, the door is considered an important representation of build quality of a vehicle so outgoing inspection stays in focus. Everyone involved with doors understands that a door is a collection of many potential experiences. The established procedures will cover several aspects such as closing energy, closing speed, static closing force and opening speed. These characteristics will capture any defect in hinge, check, seal or striker.

Saving Money

The multi-point inspection in this case required up to four different tools. First, this variety causes a time burden on the operators. For each door, they must install, activate and record each of the four different systems. Second there is the hidden cost for the overhead of maintaining 4 individual measurement system with their respective calibration and maintenance costs. The new generation EnergyPod devices does all in one. One device, one software, one setup.

Operation

The EnergyPod is controlled by PLS software. In this configuration a scan of the VIN starts a model specific test plan and guides the operator through the process, test by test, door by door. This includes Minimum Closing Energy and Minimum Closing Speed in the same operation. Followed by a push test for static closing force and unlatching to capture striker alignment. After each operation the user receives confirmation and is reassured that the data has been uploaded to the quality system. The quality system will now serve to monitor trends, work on warranty claims and overall customer satisfaction data. Overall, there was a significant reduction in operation time, lower maintenance cost and gain in reliability of data.
